But they picked up ambidextrous guard Paul Westphal from the Celtics and drafted center Alvin Adams, who would go on to become a fan favorite.
Halfway through the season, Phoenix traded away John Shumate for forward Gar Heard. Phoenix started the year blazing hot, compiling the best record in team history at the time at 14 – 9. They then seemed to remember that they were usually just a so-so team, and went 4 – 18 over the next 22 games.
However, the Suns heated up over the last 37 games of the season to finish with a 42 – 40 record. That meant they were going to the playoffs for the first time since 1970, facing archrival Seattle in the first round of the Western Conference Playoffs. The Suns won that match up 4 – 2.
They then beat defending NBA Champion Golden State in the Western Conference finals 4 – 3. That meant that Paul Westphal would be going up against his former team, as the Suns took on the Celtics in the 1976 NBA championship.
In game of 5 of that '76 NBA finals, the Suns roared back from a 22 point first-half deficit to force overtime. Gar Heard then hit a buzzer-beating turnaround jump shot that will always be remembered, to force a 3rd overtime.
Boston went on to want to win that memorable matchup 128 – 126, winning the Championship in 6 games. That is the closest the Suns have come to an NBA title as of 2014.
